Philippe Jaccottet was born in the French Alps and grew up in Geneva. He studied law at the Sorbonne and then practiced international law for a decade before turning to writing. His first short story, "The Man Who Loved Flowers," was published in 1994 and won the Grand Prix du Roman Contemporain. His second novel, The King's Choice, which won the Prix Goncourt in 2004, was translated into English by David Constantine and published in 2006 by Harper Collins.
